As a brand new rescue, before we even had our license 24 hours, I called all the local shelters to see if there were any immediate needs that our rescue could assist with.
When I spoke to the coordinator at the Wichita Animal Shelter, she told me that there were a litter of black kittens behind her now that were scheduled to be euthanized at 1 PM that day. I looked down at the time on my phone, saw that it was a little after 11 AM and let her know I was going to get around, and head that way immediately.
It is an hour drive to the Wichita Animal Shelter and so I pulled into the parking lot at 12:52 PM with 8 minutes to spare. Ready for our first official rescue transfer, we picked up 3 very sick black kittens that day and Midge was one of those kittens.
When I first got her, I rushed her to the Vet who performed several life-saving measures to give her the best possible chance of survival. Then I took her home, followed the Vet’s instructions for at-home care, and physically sat her and her sibling in front of their fresh food and water, multiple times a day, until they developed the strength to walk there themselves.
Not once did they play with one another, and I was alarmed by this so I watched every day and prayed for a miracle. And about a week later, I woke up and went into the room where they were sleeping, I noticed Midge was gone, and she had climbed over the top of her bed and was running around the house playing with her sibling and the other kittens. I am so thankful that they did not get euthanized that day and the world is a better place for it.
